इस व्रत में हाथी पर बैठे इंद्र और महालक्ष्मी का पूजन करके उपवास रखना चाहिए। रात के समय घी का दिया जलाकर और गंध, पुष्प आदि से पूजित एक सौ या यथाशक्ति अधिक दीपकों को प्रज्वलित कर देव मंदिरों, बाग-बगीचों, तुलसी के नीचे या भवनों में रखना चाहिए। सुबह होने पर स्नानादि करके इंद्र का पूजन कर ब्राह्मणों को घी-शक्कर मिश्रित खीर का भोजन कराकर वस्त्रादि की दक्षिणा और सोने के दीपक देने से सभी मनोकामनाएं पूरी होती हैं। इस दिन श्रीसूक्त, लक्ष्मी स्तोत्र का पाठ ब्राह्मण द्वारा कराकर कमलगट्टा, बेल या पंचमेवा अथवा खीर द्वारा दशांश हवन करवाना चाहिए। इस विधि से कोजागर व्रत करने से माता लक्ष्मी अति प्रसन्न होती हैं तथा धन-धान्य, मान-प्रतिष्ठा आदि सभी सुख प्रदान करती हैं।

किसी समय मगध देश में वलित नामक एक संस्कारी, लेकिन दरिद्र ब्राह्मण रहता था। ब्राह्मण जितना सज्जन था उसकी पत्नी उतनी ही दुष्ट थी। वह ब्राह्मण की दरिद्रता को लेकर रोज उसे ताने देती थी। यहां तक की पूरे गांव में भी वह अपने पति की निंदा ही किया करती थी। पति के विपरीत आचरण करना ही उसने अपने धर्म बना लिया था। यहां तक कि धन की चाह में वह रोज अपने पति को चोरी करने के लिए उकसाया करती थी। एक बार श्राद्ध के समय ब्राह्मण की पत्नी ने पूजन में रखे सभी पिण्डों को उठाकर कुएं में फेंक दिया। पत्नी की इस हरकत से दु:खी होकर ब्राह्मण जंगल में चला गया, जहां उसे नाग कन्याएं मिलीं। उस दिन आश्विन मास की पूर्णिमा थी। नागकन्याओं ने ब्राह्मण को रात्रि जागरण कर लक्ष्मी को प्रसन्न करने वाला कोजागर व्रत करने को कहा। ब्राह्मण ने विधि-विधान पूर्वक कोजागर व्रत किया। इस व्रत के प्रभाव से ब्राह्मण के पास अतुल धन-सम्पत्ति हो गई। भगवती लक्ष्मी की कृपा से उसकी पत्नी की बुद्धि भी निर्मल हो गई और वे दंपत्ति सुखपूर्वक रहने लगे।
